Tender planned for two more Yangon waste-to-energy plants

Yangon City Development Committee will issue tenders for waste-to-energy projects in June or July, according to a spokesperson from Yangon City Development Committee’s Pollution Control and Cleansing Department, as quoted in The Global New Light of Myanmar.

The plan is for two new facilities to generate electricity from garbage at two large waste dumping sites, specifically in Hlaingtharyar and North Dagon townships.

Private companies are to be invited, the article said.

Yangon already has one waste-to-energy facility in Shwe Pyi Thar township. It began operations in April, and generates some electricity for the national grid.

YCDC is the designated body for waste collection, including about 1,700 tonnes of waste in Yangon every day.

In December 2016, YCDC officials reportedly said the long-term plan is to have four waste-to-energy sites in the city, capable of generating electricity off of 500 tonnes of garbage a day.
